Mental Health Act

The Mental Health Act 2007 gained Royal Assent in July 2007 and amends the Mental Health Act 1983.

CSIP/NIMHE has been tasked by the Department of Health with the implementation of the Act. In the North West, this work is run from the CSIP North West Regional Development Centre, and is led by Dave Eldon.

The North West Local Implementation Plan details our co-ordinating, supporting and development roles in the region. It provides a framework for a comprehensive programme of actions to be carried out by various organisations to ensure the smooth implementation of the changes set out in the Act.

Responsibility for leading and co-ordinating implementation of the Plan lies with the Regional Lead. However, once enacted, the statutory obligations detailed in the amended Act will be the responsibility of individual local statutory commissioners and providers of services.

Code of Practice

The revised Code of Practice and the secondary legislation have now been laid in Parliament. Subject to the outcome of the Parliamentary process, the bulk of the changes made to the Mental Health Act 1983 by the Mental Health Act 2007 will come into effect on Monday 3 November 2008. These documents can be found of the Department of Health website here.

The deadline for the second tranche of the ISAT submissions has been extended to 27 June to allow participants to take account of the revised Code of Practice.
